Dr. Hwangbo Bae is an engineering education research scholar in the field of civil engineering. His research interests include worker safety, leadership development, and career preparation. He completed his Ph.D. degree in civil engineering at the University of Florida in 2022 and his MS and BS degrees in civil engineering at Virginia Tech in 2019 and 2017, respectively.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Bae demonstrated a strong passion for investigating the multifaceted aspects of civil engineering beyond technical prowess. His research interests revolve around exploring the human side of the profession, focusing on areas such as worker safety, leadership development, career preparation, recruitment and retention strategies, professional values, experiences of underrepresented minority groups, and cultural capital within the civil engineering industry.
Dr. Bae's research on worker safety delved into understanding the safety leadership and culture that influence occupational behaviors at the quarry and developing strategies to mitigate risks and promote a safer working environment. His findings have not only informed safety protocols and guidelines but have also influenced how safety managers can facilitate informal safety training alongside formal safety modules.
Recognizing the importance of effective leadership in the civil engineering field, Dr. Bae has studied leadership development and competencies for future engineers. His work aims to identify the key competencies and qualities that facilitate successful leadership within civil engineering and construction industries. Through his research, he has devised innovative approaches and training programs that empower emerging leaders, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
Dr. Bae's expertise extends to career preparation and the development of recruitment and retention strategies. His studies provide valuable insights into how civil engineering students can effectively navigate their career paths, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the profession. Moreover, his research delves into the factors that influence individuals' decisions to enter and remain in the civil engineering field, contributing to the development of strategies aimed at attracting and retaining diverse talent.
Furthermore, Dr. Bae explores the role of professional values and cultural capital within the civil engineering industry. His research investigates how interpersonal and intrapersonal values shape career decisions and professional development, ultimately influencing the quality of work and learning environment. Also, by shedding light on the cultural capital of Asian women within civil engineering, he aims to promote inclusivity, diversity, and equitable practices, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for the profession for all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, and gender.
Dr. Hwangbo Bae's research contributions and efforts are developing and are increasingly recognized through peer-reviewed publications. He has published in reputable journals and presented his findings at a number of conferences, disseminating knowledge and inspiring fellow scholars and practitioners in the field.
